guide to surin and bangtao beaches by the people who live here

Surin Beach Village

Surin Beach Village is a fashionable beach enclave on Phuket's west coast. Situated mid way between the Airport (25 minutes) and Patong Beach (20 minutes) the village boasts a range of high end hotels, restaurants and shops. The surrounding hills are dotted with expensive villas and holiday homes.

Surin Beach and its surrounding lands were once owned by King Rama VII who used to holiday here in the 1920's. Surin Park that borders the beach was once the site of Thailand's oldest golf courses and one on which the King use to play himself. Today Surin Beach remains a haunt of the rich and not-so-famous although in many ways it remains remarkably unspoiled. Bounded at both ends by rocky bluffs this 900m stretch of white sand and azure waters is lined by casuarinas trees and pandanus palms. The beach is largely empty and host to surfers in the summer months (May to October) and is calm and tranquil (if not a little busy) from November to March. In peak season it is not uncommon to spot celebrities on the north end of the beach as they escape the confines of the exclusive Amanpuri Resort situated on the next bay.

New Year's Eve is a special time in Surin Beach as owners and guests fill up the villas and the whole hillside lights up, providing a breathtaking backdrop for the many firework displays. The beach offers a range of restaurants and the street vendors in the car park sell local oysters and mussels when in season. Recommended Bars: The Rocks (Scenic - Surin Beach South), Stereo Lab (Fashionable Club - Southside) and Catch Beach Club (Hi-So Beach Club by Twin Palm Hotels). Recommended Restaurants Celafu (Home-style Italian), Taste (Thai-European Fusion)
